Introduction to GarageBand
This engaging 3-day course introduces primary school children to the exciting world of music production using GarageBand. With a focus on creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning, students will explore digital music-making tools including the Beat Sequencer, virtual instruments like piano and strings, and learn to build their own musical compositions.
Day 1: Exploring Sound & Rhythm
Focus: Beat Sequencer & Loops
• Introduction to GarageBand and digital music
• Exploring different musical genres and beats
• Hands-on with the Beat Sequencer: creating rhythmic patterns
• Layering Apple Loops to build a backing track
• Group sharing of beat creations
Day 2: Melody & Harmony
Focus: Piano, Strings, and Instruments
• Introduction to virtual instruments (piano, strings, bass, etc.)
• Creating simple melodies using the virtual Keyboard
• Adding harmonies using Strings and other sounds
• Understanding basic song structure: intro, verse, chorus
• Start building a short song using layered tracks
Day 3: Compose & Perform
Focus: Final Composition & Sharing
• Finalising tracks: adjusting volume, balance, and tempo
• Adding finishing touches (effects, fades, titles)
• Exporting the song and giving it a name
• Class showcase: students present their tracks to the class
• Reflecting on what was learned and how music is made digitally
Outcomes:
Students will finish the course with their own original digital song, a basic understanding of GarageBand tools, and increased confidence in using technology creatively.
